What are membranes and how do they work?

Membranes are used on both the internal and external side of a building. A vapour control membrane regulates the movement of moist indoor air and is installed on the internal side. By slowing vapour diffusion into the wall build-up, they help to prevent interstitial condensation, protecting insulation performance and safeguarding timber from decay. A continuous, well-sealed vapour control membrane is essential for long-term durability.

On the external side, breather membranes provide weather protection while allowing trapped moisture to escape. Positioned on the cold side of the insulation, they let vapour diffuse outward but block rain and wind, reducing the risk of damp and mould while supporting a healthy, diffusion-open structure.
