ASBP Briefing Papers

In order for Wood Fibre insulations & sheathings to become part of the ‘mainstream’ building fabric, STEICO UK believe that there has to be a mind set for change for build practice and to this end, we have joined forces with the other ‘Natural Fibre’ materials companies and formed the Natural Fibre Insulation Group (NFIG), which is a sub-group of the Alliance for Sustainable Building Products (ASBP).  The Alliance is an independant body, whose aim is to seek & to support industry to make better decisions and enable legislators to make better policy. They are totally committed to improving the Health & Well Being of buildings and their occupants.

One important remit for the NFIG, is to take complex language which relates to the building physics of a dwelling and explain it in everyday language, so that a common understanding, using a common language is universally spoken by all members.  The Group will be issuing a series of papers (which will be published on here on the STEICO website) that explain key aspects of a buildings performance.  The 1st paper is on the subject of ‘Breathability’ and ‘Vapour Open’ constructions.

Below is a very simply explained mission statement from the Alliance as to what and how they operate within industry.

What We do

We’re all about the products. The physical stuff we build with. We champion products that are better for us and the environment as well as those companies and organisations prepared to push the boundaries. We seek to support industry to make better decisions and legislators to make better policy. We work from a position of independence from government and from short term commercial interests. We're driven by our mission and our legitimacy flows from our committed and diverse membership.

How We Do It

The ASBP is a cross sector organisation which aims to engage with a wide range of stakeholders to improve understanding, specification and use of sustainable building products. Delivering this improvement will require ASBP, its members and professional partners to pursue a number of activities in the following areas.

  • Research – Bridge the gap between theory and practice.
  • Standards – Develop and scrutinise sustainability standards.
  • Events – Stimulate debate, challenge orthodoxy and champion best practice.
  • Policy – Provide evidence to inform better policy.
