How STEICO wood fibre insulation materials are manufactured

Two processes are used to manufacture wood fibre insulation materials - the wet process and the dry process. In both processes, fresh coniferous wood is broken down by steam and mechanical treatment into individual fibres, which are then further processed.

The wet process

In the wet process, the soaked fibres are formed into panels. Then the panels are calibrated in thickness and dried as whole pieces. The clever bit: in the wet process, the wood's own natural lignin binds the panels. This means that no external adhesives are required, making wet-process insulation boards very eco-friendly and beneficial for your living environment. 

The dry process

In the dry process, the fibres are dried before panel formation. A small amount of binder is applied to the fibres, which are then formed into panels. The clever bit: dry-processed wood fibre insulation panels are lighter and can be produced in greater thicknesses. That is why they are often used to insulate the building envelope, e.g., for above-rafter insulation or facade insulation.

Flexible insulation batts and air-injected insulation

Depending on the technology, fibres for air-injected insulation, flexible batts or solid insulation panels can be produced in the dry process.

Heat has no chance of getting in

Thanks to its high heat storage capacity, the wood fibre insulation can buffer summer heat over a period of several hours. Most heat does not even get into the living space, overheating is delayed and reduced in equal measure. In the cooler evening and night hours, the stored heat can then radiate outwards again and escape.

Compared to many synthetic insulation materials, wood fibre insulation materials are much less likely to reach temperature levels that cause discomfort. With STEICO wood fibre insulation materials, heat peaks are reduced by 25 to 33 per cent (expert analysis by Prof. Hauser). The result: with wood fibre insulation materials, we feel less discomfort on hot summer days. They regulate temperature in a natural way, increase well-being and are also good for the environment.

Rainproof sarking boards

STEICO sarking boards and wall panels are hydrophobic, i.e., water-repellent. Rainwater’s surface tension cannot break through sarking boards like STEICOuniversal dry but runs off the surface. The panels are provided with a tightly closing, all-round tongue and groove profile and thus offer a rainproofing function and serve as temporary covering.

Suitable as temporary covering for up to 12 weeks

STEICO sarking boards can be laid directly on the rafters without battens and instantly provide robust weather protection. Thanks to the special tongue and groove profile, they seal tightly and can be exposed to the elements on roof slopes over 16° - without any additional roof membrane. They fulfil three functions in one fell swoop:

• a windproof layer

• a secondary water removal layer

• additional insulation

As sarking boards, they can be used as temporary covering for several weeks

Reduce constructive thermal bridges

Laying above the rafters effectively reduces structural thermal bridges, even with thin panels. The top of the rafters is insulated and thus warmer, significantly reducing the risk of condensation.

Additional insulation above the rafters

The rafters of old building roofs are often small, but between rafter insulation alone does not provide thermal protection that meets modern standards. With insulation above the rafters, the roof can be insulated in a future-proof way without taking up valuable living space under the roof. At the same time, the sound insulation is noticeably improved.

IBR (Institut für Baubiologie in Rosenheim)

The IBR is one of the most respected testing institutes in Germany. The IBR test seal certifies that STEICO products are harmless in terms of building biology – they contribute to healthy homes and a feeling of well-being in the home.

IBU (Institut Bauen und Umwelt)

The Institute for Building and the Environment (IBU) prepares environmental declarations (EPDs) of eco-label type III in accordance with ISO and CEN standards. With the preparation of the EPDs, STEICO provides comprehensive information on the environmental impact of the ecological products over their entire life cycle.

Passivhaus

The STEICO construction system is certified as a component according to the standards of the Passivhaus Institute Dr. Wolfgang Feist. This means that the planner can draw on a large number of defined construction details. This means that passive houses can be built particularly easily and economically with the STEICO construction system.

Keymark

The Keymark certification stands for the high quality of the STEICO range. The uniform European certification mark for standardised products documents the compliance of products with European norms and quality standards.

Certified fire protection

The Fraunhofer Institute for Wood Research - one of Germany's most-renowned research institutes - has examined and determined the fire behaviour of insulation materials made from renewable raw materials and rigid foam:

“Rigid foams burn extremely quickly, with very strong dark smoke formation, and melt and drip during burning. The investigated natural insulation materials (including STEICO wood fibre insulation materials) also burn, but relatively slowly, with little smoke development and do not drip while burning. The fire behaviour of natural insulation materials is therefore significantly more advantageous than that of rigid foams, especially in the early phases of a fire, and is predictable.”

High raw density = excellent sound insulation

As a general rule, the heavier a component, the less noise can penetrate it. When it comes to sound insulation that means that the weight (mass) of the building component - i.e. the bulk density of the building material - is what counts, along with other aspects. The component thickness is not necessarily decisive. STEICO wood fibre insulating materials are characterised by a particularly high raw density and thus support effective noise protection.
