Safe fire protection for the entire building

Safe fire protection structures
up to REI90

Wood also boasts impressive fire protection features. Despite their flammability, wooden structures and STEICO wood fibre insulation materials exhibit a high degree of fire resistance.

  • In the event of a fire, a charring layer prevents STEICO insulation materials from burning through quickly and thus inhibits the spread of fire - in contrast to many conventional insulation materials, which can melt and drip. STEICO insulation materials can be used to build fire protection structures from REI30 to REI90. In other words, a fire would need to last for 90 minutes to exceed the safety requirements placed on the construction.
  • STEICO insulation does not drip from the facade during burning, unlike some rigid foams. That means more safety in the event of facade fires. This means that extinguishing is not made more complicated by additional hazards.
  • In case of fire, STEICO insulation materials generate significantly less smoke than, for example, some organic foam-based insulation materials. This is crucial for emergency services and anyone inside.
  • Pressure-resistant STEICO insulation materials meet the classification of 'normally inflammable' without any added materials whatsoever. The gross density is the key factor. The flexible and adaptable STEICO framing insulation materials are equipped with natural additives and are therefore also 'normally inflammable'.

Insulation materials in one fire comparison

Certified fire protection

The Fraunhofer Institute for Wood Research - one of Germany's most-renowned research institutes - has examined and determined the fire behaviour of insulation materials made from renewable raw materials and rigid foam:

“Rigid foams burn extremely quickly, with very strong dark smoke formation, and melt and drip during burning. The investigated natural insulation materials (including STEICO wood fibre insulation materials) also burn, but relatively slowly, with little smoke development and do not drip while burning. The fire behaviour of natural insulation materials is therefore significantly more advantageous than that of rigid foams, especially in the early phases of a fire, and is predictable.”
